Dear Warden 02:55
Dear Warden, when I’m gone You will still be here Dear Warden, when I’m gone You will still be here But you cannot take the best of me Thought you have tried you have tried For I am a wave that crashes across the sea On the rocks for so long and one day free

Birdman 03:52
There aint no way out of here Bobby Bobby there aint no way out of here Nothing to do but count the hours the days and the years Better find a way to set your mind free Better find a way to set your mind free Take a stand for what you’re worth Bobby Bobby, take a stand for what you’re worth The bird doctor of Levenworth, a solitary man Temper temper Bobby steady that hand A man aint whipped until he quits But you would never give them the pleasure Four walls cant stop your mind a-travelling But you would never give them the pleasure Take a stand for what you’re worth Bobby Bobby, take a stand for what you’re worth Here in Alcatraz you’re 594 Bobby Bobby in Alcatraz you’re number 594 They took away your birds but cant you still hear them sing You’ve dont so much there’s no point stopping now You’ve come this fair aint no point stopping now Fight the fight to stay alive Bobby Bobby fight the fight to stay alive Always looking outward man, it’s the only choice you’ve got Would you change anything at all, I wonder Would you change anything at all A man aint whipped until he quits But you would never give them the pleasure Four walls cant stop your mind a-travelling But you would never give them the pleasure You would never give them the pleasure Birdman let your mind fly Birdman

Murder 04:21
Murder They’ve got me in for murder Murder’s what I’ve done I dont expect you to understand I did it for love I did it for love There I was riding on life’s penny arcade Taking my chances dipping in the well Seeing whatever comes my way Seeing whatever comes my way They’ve got me in for murder Murder’s what I’ve done I dont expect you to understand I did it for love I did it for love Lost my work I was just married Had a wife and family Times were hard and I had no choice But I was no Stagger Lee, I aint no Stagger Lee Put the money in the bag Put the money in the bag I told the clerk don't be silly And we’ll both get out of here ok I told him I told him I told him again But he wanted it his way He wanted it his way He turned or flinched or something And I panicked for a second My finger slipped And my whole life sailed away They’ve got me in for murder Murder’s what I’ve done I dont expect you to understand I did it for love I did it for love And this is where I’ve taken me On this rock now I’ll spend my life Here the silence comes down at night time Makes me shiver in fright Makes me shiver in fright Here there’s no rehabilitation There’s no promises there is no God There is just time there is just time There is just time there is just time They’ve got me in for murder Murder’s what I’ve done I dont expect you to understand I did it for love I did it for love

Lie To You 03:38
Lie To You Into the light of day I have broken with my past Regina Celi; Queen of Heaven Taught me and I learnt fast That everybody’s got their secrets Baby I’ve got mine too Dont ask me what I did And I wont have to lie to you How I have dreamed this day When I could taste that sun shine I bow my head and on bended knees To Hosanna in the highest I pray And I am in your loving arms Know that I’ll be true But don't ask me what I did And I wont have to lie to you What is this fever That I cant explain It comes out of nowhere Like a hellhound from the gallows It grabs me and it wont let go And again I will say That I’ve put it all in my past But sooner or later it will come calling Pulling on my shirt Taunting, daring See everybody’s got their secrets Baby I’ve got mine too Dont ask me what I did And I wont have to lie to you

The Ballad Of John Giles Away bound Away Freedom awaits if we overcome these cold cold waters John Giles was never one to pray But he couldn't fight it In ’45 on July 31 he did run And escape to Angel Island Away bound Away Freedom awaits if we overcome these cold cold waters Biding his time till the moment was right He pretended to be and army officer He thought I’ll never change the things that I’ve done But I’ve paid enough I’ve paid enough And all the while Giles kept singing his song Away bound Away Freedom awaits if we overcome these cold cold waters And the Warden was there to greet him to shore Sent him right back for five years more Giles smiled at him said “ah its was worth it For that moment of glory, freedom bound You think I’m a bad man and I understand But I’ve paid enough I’ve paid enough And all the while Giles kept singing his song All the while Giles kept singing his song All the while Giles kept singing his song Away bound Away Freedom awaits if we overcome these cold cold waters

about

The Alcatraz EP (2012) came about after reading the real life story of John Giles and his failed escape. I loved the story and equally loved the idea about writing narrative songs, something I’d never done before. So a few months spent researching all things Alcatraz gave birth to this EP.
